Odori-ko just opened on October 1st – but the Takei family has been serving excellent Japanese food for over 4 decades in Hawaii.

Co-owners Hiro and Rie Takei tell us more about the restaurant and its community partnerships in today’s Hawaii’s Kitchen.  Chef Yasu also shows us how to make a delicious dragon tempura sushi roll.

Step Up To The Plate: A Gathering Place

DO-101115-StepUp-Odoriko-LT003A new location calls for a celebra-tory grand opening at Odori-ko — which is owned and operated by the dynamic sibling duo of Rie Akita and Hiro Takei. The pair assumed control of the eatery from their father, who first opened the establishment at King’s Village in 1978. Today, the restaurant welcomes hungry customers to its Kapiolani Boulevard location.

In addition to its traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine, Odori-ko is known for its distinct interior design and impeccable service. During lunch, patrons order food from the bar, but they still have the option of enjoying their meal in-house or taking it to go. During dinner hours, full-dining services can be expected.

Beyond eating, visitors are invited to use the restaurant for personal or professional reasons — the perfect spot to, as the restaurant’s tagline says, “Escape, Engage, Indulge.”

“We just want it to be a gathering place,” says Akita.

Doing Well By Doing Good


If satisfaction comes from doing well by doing good, then the Takei family’s new venture, Odori-ko at 1680 Kapiolani Blvd., has the right idea. The restaurant, featuring contemporary Japanese fare in a pleasant atmosphere, opened its doors last week in a location next to 24 Hour Fitness in the busy Kapiolani corridor. The owners have a business model that includes giving back to the community, and they have partnered with three nonprofit agencies so when diners order certain dishes, 10 percent goes to the agency. Order the Dragon Tempura Roll to benefit Junior Achievement of Hawaii, the Macadamia Nut Tofu to help the YWCA or the Wafu Steak to give to the Touch a Heart Foundation.
